胆小的猎手和伐木人(Timid hunters and loggers)

有个猎人在寻找狮子的足迹。他看见依法伐木人，就问他：“喂，你在这附近看到狮子的足迹了吗？狮子的巢穴在哪里你知道吗？”伐木人回答道：“啊，我知道哦。你现在和我一起走，就能看见狮子了。猎人马上变得畏惧了，害怕地牙齿打颤说：“不不不，我就是找找狮子的足迹吧了，不想看到真正的狮子。”

寓意：嘴上说起来很厉害，但是实际上是胆小鬼的人。

A hunter is looking for the footprints of a lion. When he saw the woodcutter according to law, he asked him, "Hey, do you see the footprints of lions around here? Where are the lion's nests? Do you know?" the woodcutter replied, "ah, I know. Now you can see the lions when you walk with me. The hunter immediately became afraid and trembled his teeth and said: "No, no, no, I just look for the footprints of lions. I don't want to see real lions."

Moral: he is a coward who speaks very well, but he is actually a coward.

小猪和羊群（Pigs and sheep）

有头小猪混进了羊群里，和羊一起吃食料。后来，牧人发现了，捉住了他，他竭力嚎叫，又拼命挣扎。羊群指责他大喊大叫，说：“我们常常被牧人捉，可从来不这样叫喊。”小猪对他们说：“我被捉与你们被捉是两件不同的事，捉你们仅为了一毛或一奶，捉我却是为了吃我的肉呀。”

寓意：真正的危险不是关系钱财，而是关系生命。

A little pig got into the sheep and ate food with the sheep. Later, the shepherd found him and caught him. He tried to howl and struggle. The sheep accused him of shouting, "we are often caught by shepherds, but we never shout like this." the little pig said to them, "I am caught for a hair or milk, but I am caught for my meat."

Moral: the real danger is not about money, but about life.

旅途中的第欧根尼（Diogenes on the journey）

古希腊哲学家第欧根尼外出旅行，走到一条洪水泛滥的河边，站在岸上无法过河。有个经常背人过河的人，见他在那里为难，便走过来把他搁在肩上，很友好地背他渡过了河。他很感激这个人，站在河岸上抱怨自己贫穷，无法报答行善的人。当他正思索这事的时候，看见那人又在背别的人过河。第欧根尼走上前说：“对于刚才的事我不必再感谢你了。我现在知道，你不加选择的这样做，只是一种怪癖。”寓意：有些人对于任何人都不加审慎地行善，他们得到的不是赞誉，而是愚蠢的骂名。Diogenes, an ancient Greek philosopher, traveled to a flooded river. He stood on the bank and couldn't cross the river. A man who often crossed the river on his back saw that he was in trouble there, so he came over, put him on his shoulder and carried him across the river in a friendly way. He was very grateful to this man. He stood on the river bank and complained that he was poor and could not repay the people who did good. While he was thinking about it, he saw the man crossing the river on his back. Diogenes stepped forward and said, "I don't have to thank you for what happened just now. I now know that it's just a quirk for you to do it indiscriminately."

Moral: some people do good without prudence to anyone. What they get is not praise, but stupid curse.

橡树与宙斯（Oak and Zeus）

橡树指责宙斯说:“我们生存着毫无意义，所有的植物中我们被砍伐得最多。”宙斯说:“招来不幸原因全在你们自己，假如你们不能做斧柄，对木匠和农夫毫无用处，那么斧头也不会来砍你们了。"

寓意：有些人把自己所引起的不幸，毫无道理地归咎于神。

The oak tree accused Zeus of saying, "our existence is meaningless, and we have been cut down the most of all plants." Zeus said, "the cause of misfortune is all in yourself. If you can't make an axe handle and be of no use to carpenters and farmers, then the axe won't come to cut you”

Moral: some people blame God for their misfortune without reason.

樵夫与橡树（Woodcutter and oak）

有个樵夫在砍橡树。他先用橡树枝做成楔子，再用楔子很容易地就劈开了树身。橡树说：“我不怨恨那斧子，而更恨那从我身上生出来的楔子。”

寓意：一个人被家人伤害，比被别人伤害更痛苦，更伤心。

A woodcutter was chopping oak trees. He first made a wedge out of oak branches and then easily split the tree with a wedge. The oak tree said, "I hate not the axe, but the wedge that came out of me."

Moral: a person who is hurt by his family is more painful and sad than being hurt by others.
