The Town East of the Huai
—To the Tune of Yangchow Slow
By JIANG Kui
Tr. ZHAO Yanchun
The town’s east of the Huai,
Green bamboo in its west,
Where I take off the saddle to rest.
For miles and miles blows a spring breeze,
In green wheat shepherd’s purse one sees.
After the Hun steeds o’er the stream did neigh,
The trees and moat decay,
No more war, no more fray.
Dusk falling down,
There blows the cold horn;
All empty is the town.
If the bright Du comes back,
He must feel pity for the ruins, alack.
E’en if he could run his brush well
To describe a fair belle,
The pathos he can’t tell.
The Two-dozen-arch Bridge is there still
The waves stir my heart,
With silent moonlight chill.
Beside the bridge red peonies bloom,
Year after year, do you know, for whom?
